Update: Crash in Somerville shuts down part of Davis Square, woman killed
An elderly Medford woman was killed after being run over by a delivery truck in Davis Square Thursday morning.
Helen Monagle, 90, died at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge after the crash, Somerville police said.
Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Holland and Dover streets in Somerville at about 10:20 a.m. for a report of an accident. Police shut down parts of Davis Square for hours during the investigation.
A 24-year-old Melrose man was driving the FedEx truck that hit Monagle.
“Our heartfelt thoughts are with all of those involved in [Thursday] morning’s incident. Safety is of the utmost importance to FedEx, and we are cooperating with the authorities as we try to determine what happened,” FedEx said in a statement.
The incident is being investigated, police said.
“It is unfortunate for the community that we have to report this accident,” Somerville Police Chief Charles Femino said in a statement. “The exact circumstances of how and why this accident occurred remain under investigation and our condolences remain with the family and friends of the victim.”
