Brooklyn businesses to get their own stamp of approval

A new three-tiered grading system unveiled by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce will finally answer just how authentically Brooklyn certain products are.

Bronze, silver and gold seals measure how much Brooklyn plays a part in the production process through a point-based system that includes how many Brooklynites are employed by the business and where the product is developed.

However, only businesses headquartered in Kings County making at least one physical product can apply for the seal — a cog branded “Brooklyn Made,” with the “m” being a Brooklyn Bridge tower graphic.

The idea for the program came about from a team of students from New York University’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

The chamber said an independent panel would review applications — which cost as much as $50 for business unaffiliated with the chamber — every three months.

“Brooklyn stands for authentic local craftsmanship, and when you see the ‘Brooklyn Made’ label, you know that’s what you are getting,” chamber President Carlo Scissura said in a statement.

“There are a lot of pretenders, and we want to make sure we protect the real deal makers who are getting it done here in the coolest city on the planet,” he added.

The stamp makes its debut at Friday’s Brooklyn Eats trade show on June 27.
