The man who would unseat Rep. Charlie Rangel conceded to longtime Harlem legislator on Thursday.

State Sen. Adriano Espaillat officially conceded to Rangel two days after the primary for the 13th Congressional district and committed to run for his seat in the Legislature once more.

Espaillat called Rangel to congratulate the 84-year-old incumbent’s victory and offered thanks to his supporters in a statement.

“While much has been written about the politics of race and ethnicity within this district, there is no question that our campaign focused on bringing the community together around our shared needs and struggles,” Espaillat said.

By Wednesday morning, unofficial results showed Rep. Charlie Rangel with a 1,828 vote lead over Espaillat.

Immediately after the election, Espaillat hesitated to cede the race.

“We think it is prudent to wait for the final results before we make any announcement,” Espaillat said at the time.

The concession took less time than many observers expected. When the two men faced off in 2012, voting irregularities led Espaillat to challenge the city Board of Election’s final count and drew in the courts.

Espaillat is expected to defend his Senate seat against Rangel ally and former City Councilman Robert Jackson.

Rangel is scheduled to appear at the Rev. Al Sharpton’s weekly rally on Saturday.

“Now that the campaign is over and Congressman Rangel has won, we look forward to coming together and addressing the issues facing the 13th Congressional District,” Charlie King, a senior adviser to the campaign, wrote on Wednesday.
