Philadelphia reporter Leah R. Kauffman says she’s named and scored an interview with the alleged Kurt Vile mural defacer and it’s DJ Lee Mayjahs, who lives in Philadelphia.

On Sunday afternoon, Kauffman posted an interview on her Facebook page with Mayjahs, a Burning Man enthusiast who has deejayed at local spots like the Trocadero, TLA, Silk City and more — who seems quite remorseful of his act. The alleged defacer was snapped on Saturday morning painting over Stephen Powers famous Fishtown mural commissioned as the cover for Philadelphia-born rocker ‘n’ roller Kurt Vile’s fifth album “Wakin on a Pretty Daze.”

“I feel like the neighborhood has been moving in a positive direction for so long and I just thought that mural there was the cause of more illegal graffiti,” Mayjays told Kauffman.

After doing some Internet searching, Kauffman reports, Mayjahs didn’t realize what he had done — and to what he had done it to.

“I didn’t realize the people in the neighborhood love it,” Mayjahs told Kauffman. “I’ve never really sat and looked at it. I never did any research on it and then I just snapped.”

Kauffman is reporting that Mayjahs is offering to pay Powers — also known as ESPO — to restore the mural. He also says he reached out to Vile himself to offer an apology.

Earlier today, Vile posted on social media a link of Metro Philadelphia’s original story about the mural defacing with the message: “Bummer of a day yesterday. The mural that was painted for the cover of Wakin’ was defaced. We’re all working on plans to have it redone and updated.”
