The latest round of MBTA fare hikes kicks in Tuesday, jacking up the cost to ride the T by an average of 5 percent.

According to the T, the fare increase is expected to generate between $20 million and $24 million in new revenue, and will have a minimal impact on ridership – reducing it by less than 1 percent.

It’s the first fare increase since July 2012, when the T raised fares by an average of 23 percent.

The charge for an adult local bus ride with a CharlieCard is now $1.60, and the on-board cash fare for a bus ride is now $2.10.

The adult rapid transit fare has also risen to $2.10 with a CharlieCard and $2.65 with a paper ticket. Commuter rail rides will increase to $5.75 in Zone 1, $8.50 in Zone 5 and $11.50 in Zone 10.

MassDOT’s Finance Committee approved the hike on May 14.

“I think it’s just ridiculous because this happened [in 2012]. Especially because nothing really gets fixed or changes,” said Kyley Bernardini, who works at Faneuil Hall and takes the T daily. Bernardini was one of the few MBTA passengers Metro spoke to who was aware of the fare hike.

Despite the increased costs, Bernardini said she will not opt out of taking the T.

“That’s the thing; I don’t really have a choice. For the most part you have to take the T, even if it’s $10 a ride, people need to take public transportation.”
