A Route 34 SEPTA trolley was apparently struck by a van that ran a red light around 8 a.m. this morning, leading two people to require hospitalization, SEPTA said.

“What the preliminary investigation was showing was that the van that was involved it was believed ran a red light,” said SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch.

A SEPTA investigation into the incident, which occurred around 8 a.m. near 55th Street and Baltimore Avenue, is ongoing. The van reportedly struck the center of the trolley on the driver’s side, but the trolley did not sustain “major damage,” Busch said.

The 34 trolley, which runs along Baltimore Avenue into Center City, has its own Twitter account, which alerted commuters to the incident at 8:22 a.m.

Just over an hour later, service was returned to normal, according to the Route 34 Twitter account.

One passenger on the trolley and one person who was inside the van were transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) to be examined.

“At the scene they were able to report their injuries and they were taken to HUP to be looked at,” Busch said.

No further information was immediately available about the specifics of the passengers’ injuries.

Almost every SEPTA route has its own Twitter account for timely service updates. Check SEPTA.org to find the SEPTA Twitter account relevant to your commute.
