(Update) Homes evacuated in Lawrence for possible explosives, chemicals
Several homes were evacuated in Lawrence on Sunday after police found chemicals and what they believed to be pipe bomb in a private residence, Methuen police reported.
Methuen and Lawrence police responded with a hazardous materials team and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, and determined there was no threat.
Authorities discovered the items after responding to 200 Exchange St. to recover weapons.
Around 1:30 p.m., police said what they initially believed to be a pipe bomb was actually an empty nunchuck.
The items apparently belonged to a man in his 40s who lived at the residence and died in May. His mother found the suspicious items, which included a cross bow, fuse and powders, when she was cleaning the home.
Residents were expected to be allowed to return home during the afternoon.
