New York City has three of America’s best hospitals: Report

New York Presbyterian Hospital was ranked sixth best hospital in the nation.
New York Presbyterian Hospital was ranked sixth best hospital in the nation.

Three of the top 17 hospitals in the United States are right here in New York City, according to a new survey of nearly 5,000 institutions across the country.

New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell ranked number six, NYU Langone Medical Center came in at 15 and Mount Sinai at 16 on the honor roll of the 25th annual Best Hospitals rankings 2014-15 released yesterday by U.S. News and World Report.

The report surveyed 4,743 nonfederal community hospitals across the nation on their performance on 16 specialties, which include cancer, orthopedics, and neurology and neurosurgery. New York Presbyterian was the top hospital in New York. “This achievement is made possible by our trustees and our amazing team of doctors, nurses and staff, who are dedicated to providing the highest-quality and most compassionate care, every day to every patient,” said Dr. Steven J. Corwin, CEO of the hospital

Only 17 institutions qualified for the honor roll, ranking at or near the top in six or more specialties. Another 608 were regional high performers while 144 were nationally ranked in one or more specialties.

This year, the methodology was drastically changed for objectivity in the survey. Patient safety was a more important indicator, doubled to 10 percent of each hospital’s score, while the weight given to hospital reputation was reduced to 27.5 percent from 32.5 percent. “The resulting rankings offer healthcare consumers better guidance than effort on which hospitals they might consider if they face unusually challenging medical needs,” said Lucy Lyons, a representative for U.S. News and World Report.
