Wawa is abandoning its first born.

According to the Delaware County Times, the convenience store chain plans to close its first-ever store — built in in Ridley Township, Delaware County, in the 60s — to make way for a new “super” store down the road.

Apparently, the chain does not own the land at MacDade Boulevard and Swarthmore Avenue in which the store sits and has decided to instead build a new store less than a minute’s drive down the road, at MacDade Boulevard and Kedron Avenue (Route 420). Since Wawa does not own the land it cannot dictate the future of the original building and will not seek to preserve it for historical purposes.

The new “super” Wawa will spread out over a 4-acre site and feature six gasoline islands. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2015.

The chain has expanded significantly in the 50 years since it opened its first store in the suburban Philadelphia municipality.

Other than Pennsylvania, the chain boasts locations in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida.

Susan Bratton, the chain’s regional real estate manager, told the newspaper: “It will still be store (No.) 1 for us, even though it’s a new store.”
