University City is clearing room to house more start-ups.

The Innovation Center @3401, which serves as an incubator to house and help young startups grow, officially opened Monday. The center, which is a large floor of tables and offices for startups to work, is situated on the second floor of the University City Science Center at 34th and Market Streets.

The Innovation Center is just another example of Drexel University and the Science Center’s growing relationship.

On the first floor of the building Drexel houses its ExCite Center. Stephen S. Tang, Science Center president and CEO, said the first floor shows how innovation can work in an academic setting.

“Most of the work involves some aspect of teaching and faculty-student interaction, while the Innovation Center on the second floor is more about industry interaction between industry and between academia,” he said. “So you have there on two floors the type of collaboration we’d like to see across the whole innovation ecosystem here in Philadelphia.”

Lindstrom said it’s an opportunity to bring together young people starting businesses in the same room.

“It’s all about proximity,” said Kara Lindstrom, program manager, “That’s the whole point.”
