Canada Day: How are you celebrating our neighbor to the north?

Vancouver celebrates Canada Day, as is its wont.

While we’re ramping up our July 4 celebrations (“U! S! A! U! S! A!”) we should not that today is also a special day for our friendly neighbors to the north. Yes, today is Canada Day, celebrating the day in 1867 that the nation of Canada was born.

Want to join in on the Canucks’ fun? Of course you do — if you don’t, you’ll be ‘soary’! Here are some tips to making the most of Canada Day:

–End your questions with “eh?”

–Get very excited about hockey.

–Be very polite to people. (We had to get the obvious ones out of the way first.)

–Make poutines! Get some thick-cut french fries, gravy and some cheese curds. Heat up the fries and the gravy. (“LOL, cheese curds?” — every American.) Then, follow these instructions from the blog Geeks Are Sexy:

1. Dump a bit of cheese curds on the bottom of a bowl
2. Cover them with lots of fries
3. Cover the fries with a good fistful of curds
4. Pour sauce on top of everything
5. Enjoy

–Make the alcoholic equivalent to poutine: A Caesar! It’s basically a Bloody Mary, except it’s from Canada so Canadians looooove them! Here’s what you need to make one, from Art of Drink:

1½ oz Vodka
Dash Worcestershire Sauce
Dash Tabasco
Salt & Pepper
Top Clamato Juice

Rim glass with celery slat and build drink in a Collins glass and garnish with celery and a lime.

Lie on the ground and kiss somebody.

–Enjoy the work of Canadian bands that Americans don’t know about! To start, here are some tunes by Sloan, the Tragically Hip, and the little-loved novelty group Prozzäk:

E

–Later on, why not take in some Canadian cinema? Why not indulge in the bodyhorror of David Cronenberg, or the dreary ennui of Atom Egoyan! Both are perfect if you’ve got a first date with a cute Canadian coming up!

How are you celebrating Canada Day?
