Be prepared: There might be an Internet blackout on Monday

Is anyone else panicking over a potential Internet blackout?

Have you ever been at home and the electricity goes out due to a storm (or an unpaid electric bill – we don’t judge)?

A similar storm is brewing as thousands of people might wake up on Monday with no Internet access. That mean no e-mail, no Facebook, no Twitter, no Netflix. Nada.

July 9 marks the expiration to a temporary fix to a software scam shut down by the FBI last year.

Last November, the FBI shut down a scam in which millions of computers were infected with the “Internet Doomsday” virus. The scam redirected Internet searches through DNS servers used by scammers which in turned granted them $14 million in advertising revenue.

After the bust a federal judge ordered the FBI to use temporary servers while PCs were repaired. The temporary servers will shut down at 12:01 EDT, Monday.

Anyone with a computer still infected with the virus is likely to lose Internet access.

According to Reuters some U.S. Internet providers like AT&T and Time Warner Cable have made adjustments for their customers to have Internet access.

In the United States, the virus has affected approximately 69,000 people.

There are free diagnostic checks, set up by Facebook and the FBI, for users whose computers may be infected.

So, brace yourselves fellow Internet surfers, we might just have to sit back and read a book instead, tomorrow.
