Boston Marathon blasts added to list of past attacks on Patriots’ Day

Patriots’ Day is a holiday in the state of Massachusetts. It usually marks the beginning of spring break for schools and is celebrated with two events: a Boston Red Sox game at 11 a.m. at Fenway Park and the Boston Marathon.

“It’s a day that celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the early days of our nation,” said President Barack Obama while addressing the nation Monday evening after explosions in Boston killed three and injured more than 100.

The week of Patriots’ Day has been a tragic one in years past.

It was Patriots’ Day on April 19, 1993, when the siege at Mount Carmel Center in Waco, Texas, came to an end. At least 72 people died.

On April 19, 1995, two days after Patriots’ Day, a bomb made of fertilizer, diesel fuel and other chemicals was detonated outside a federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people.

Some of the nation’s most notorious school shootings occurred around Patriots’ Day.

On April 20, 1999, the day after Patriots’ Day, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and one teacher at Columbine High School before turning the guns on themselves.

Eight years later, on April 16, 2007, the world was stunned by the shootings at Virginia Tech. Tuesday marks the six-year anniversary of that deadly attack by a lone gunman who killed 32 people.

There is no connection to these incidents other than their occurrence in the same week of April.
