33 students suspended for ‘twerking’ video

Kids these days.

Long gone are the days of the Macarena or even Soldier Boy. Teenagers today are “twerking.”

When you see it, you know it. It’s the rapid popping of the booty. Or as NBC San Diego reports, “for those unfamiliar with the trend, twerking involves popping of the hips in a suggestive dance move.”

33 students at the Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego, California were suspending for making a twerking video. The 32 teens twerked and did handstands to a YG song for a media class. The director posted it to YouTube and since the Scripps Ranch High School student handbook prohibits “verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature made by someone from or in the educational setting,” the 33 students were suspended.

They will be banned from prom and graduation.

“Suspended, banned from prom, and prevented from walking at graduation all because of an awesome twerk video. I don’t understand,” tweeted one student.

We don’t know if the video is ‘awesome’ but it’s definitely something. More than anything, it’s a video you’d expect a group of teenagers to make. These teens have mad twerking skills. We can’t pop our hips like that. It’s almost as entertaining as the Miley Cyrus’ twekring video.

Scripps Ranch High School parents do not really agree with the punishment either.

One mother told NBC that the school should have used this as a learning experience to remind students that they when they are recorded, they never know where that video can end up.

“I just think it’s not that big of a deal,” another parent told NBC. “It was just expression, maybe overly expressive I guess.”

According to NBC seniors involved are on senior review and now have to ask for their prom and graduation back in front of a panel.

Long live, twerking.
