A 61-year-old woman was rescued from the rubble at 22nd and Market streets late Wednesday night, nearly 13 hours after a building being demolished there suddenly collapsed, injuring 14 and killing six.

The dramatic late-night rescue of Myra Plekam, of Kensington, came shortly after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, about a half-hour after Mayor Michael Nutter confirmed in a press conference that the building collapse death toll stood at six people — one man and five women. For several hours, it appeared the building collapse had only claimed one life.

Rescuers sifting through the rubble about 11:30 p.m. found the woman, who, according to multiple reports, was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition.

All six people killed and the 14 people injured in the building collapse were inside the Salvation Army thrift store at the corner of 22nd and Market. The store at 2140 Market St. was crushed under the weight of the building next door at 2136 Market St., which suddenly collapsed as it was being demolished about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.
