What is ‘Sharknado’ and why is the Internet obsessed?

The Internet experienced a frenzied flurry of excitement Thursday night, all prompted by a frenzied flurry of shark-filled tornadoes.

Most of America woke up to a string of tweets, Facebook posts and morning news program references about “Sharknado.” If you went into work today and found yourself perpetually confused about all this “Sharknado” talk, thinking it was some kind of sea creature convergence of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, here’s a breakdown of what you missed:

“Sharknado” is a SyFy TV-move which premiered Thursday night. It is a disaster film about shark-infested tornadoes which wreak havoc on the human population. Tara Reid (remember her?) stars in the flick, proving to revive her career a bit (for now).

What begins as a severe storm warning, soon evolves into flooding and hurricane-like conditions, complete with vicious sharks which have been drawn into the super storm through ocean water (we think?). Actually, it makes no sense whatsoever. So begins a fight for survival as Tara and her band of C-list actors decide to battle back against these sharknados.

Spoiler alert: You might witness a shark being spliced in half by a chainsaw. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Turns out, only about one to to million people actually watched it last night, but as a perfect recipe for the stuff of viral fodder, “Sharknado” has proven its worth as a low-budget flick that will forever live on in social media.

Here’s what people are saying about it on Twitter:
