Attorney: Hernandez killed Lloyd to keep him quiet about 2012 double murder

A witness in the Aaron Hernandez case told authorities that the former Patriots tight end killed semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd because Hernandez no longer trusted him to keep quiet about a 2012 double murder in the South End, an attorney for the media said during a hearing Wednesday.

“Lloyd had info linking him to 2012 homicide and Hernandez no longer trusted him to keep quiet,” said one of the attorneys representing several media outlets during a hearing to have that witnesses’ impounded statement  released, along with other documents related to the murder case.

Lloyd’s family wept openly in Attleboro District Court after hearing the statement, as Hernandez, cuffed, unshaven and wearing a buttoned-down dress shirt and blue suit jacket, looked on stoically. He was charged on June 26 for allegedly shooting and killing Lloyd, 27, execution-style on June 17 in an industrial area near Hernandez’s in North Attleboro home. He has pleaded not guilty.

The attorney’s statement Wednesday referenced the murder of two Cape Verdean immigrants who were shot to death in their car in the South End in July 2012 — a case that the Suffolk County grand jury is reportedly hearing and reports indicate Hernandez is close to be charged in connection with.

Prior to the arguments from attorneys representing the media, a judge postponed Hernandez’s probably cause hearing until Aug. 22, granting the state’s request for more time to allow a grand jury to consider the evidence gathered in the case.

Hernandez’s attorney James Sultan said Hernandez has been held for four weeks in a solitary cell at Bristol County House of Corrections and asked that the complaint against him be dismissed.

“The first assistant [district attorney Bill McCauley] said this was a compelling case, replete with video tapes, and made it sound like a slam dunk case,” Sultan said. “Now four weeks later, the Commonwealth is not even ready to show this court [they can meet] meet even the probable cause standard to hold Mr. Hernandez.”

The judge disagreed.

“Four weeks is a long time for somebody being held, but the charge is a murder charge,” he said before granting the extension.

The hearing happened minutes after Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick spoke publicly for the first time since Hernandez’s arrest.

“It’s a sad day, really a sad day on so many levels,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim. A young man lost his life and his family has suffered a tragic loss and there’s no way to understate that.”

Belichick said he was ”shocked and disappointed having someone in the organization that’s involved in a murder investigation and that’s a terrible thing.”

Although Belichick took questions from reporters, he did not elaborate on his statement, saying only, ”I wouldn’t comment on any player who has ongoing criminal charges and legal situations.”
