VIDEO: ‘Camp Gyno’ stars in viral ad for feminine products company

“It’s like Santa — for your vagina.”

So says a young girl who has shot to Internet stardom for her role as “Camp Gyno” in an ad for HelloFlo, a company that sends monthly feminine care packages to women during their periods.

Just when we thought we’d never see a tampon or pad commercial that didn’t make us cringe, HelloFlo set a new bar with a marketing campaign that’s just funny and unique enough to make it viral. The ad on YouTube had been viewed nearly 80,000 by Tuesday morning and the video is making the rounds on news sites.

The video follows a young lady at summer camp who becomes the first of the group to get her period. Her newfound status quickly goes to her head, as she takes on the role of Camp Gyno, leading the other young ladies through the experience of their first periods.

“It’s like I’m Joan and their vag is the arc,” she says.

Her popularity is quickly brought to a halt, though, as the other campers stop coming to her for all their menstrual needs. She soon realizes it’s because of a HelloFlo’s snazzy care packages, complete with tampons, pads, pantyliners and candy.

“The whole camp started getting friggin care packages in the mail,” the tiny Camp Gyno exclaims.

Naama Bloom, founder of HelloFlo, told AdWeek the idea for the commercial came one night over wine and Thai food.

“I was listing out my insights about the period experience and shared the story of the girl at camp that my friends and I all turned to for advice,” Bloom said. “When Pete said, ‘You mean like a Camp Gyno?’ we basically knew what we had to do. Only humor could tell this story in a way that would be relatable, endearing and shareable.”
