Cheney sisters disagree on gay marriage issue

Mary Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, openly criticized her older sister Liz Cheney’s stance on gay marriage, according to the New York Times.

Mary Cheney, like many Americans, used Facebook to vent her frustrations. “For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage,” she wrote. “Freedom means freedom for everyone. That means that all families — regardless of how they look or how they are made — all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other.” She wrapped up her post by suggesting her friends share her it: “Please like and share if you agree.”

Liz Cheney is a Wyoming Senate candidate and has publicly declared Friday that she does not support gay marriage. “I am not pro-gay marriage. I believe the issue of marriage must be decided by the states, and by the people in the states, not by judges and not even by legislators, but by the people themselves.”

Her campaign said she made this statement in response to a push poll asking voters, “Are you aware that Liz Cheney supports abortion and aggressively promotes gay marriage?” according to the Daily Caller.

Liz Cheney’s younger sister, Mary, has been scrutinized before for being openly gay while working as a campaign aide to her conservative father; Dick Cheney supports gay marriage. Mary Cheney has a wife and two children and lives in Virginia, near her parents. She married her longtime partner Heather Poe last year in Washington, D.C., as Virginia does not allow same-sex marriage. Mary Cheney is also the author of political memoir “Now It’s My Turn: A Daughter’s Chronicle of Political Life.”

Liz Cheney is running against incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyoming, who opposes legalizing same-sex marriage, and may be under pressure to maintain an extreme conservative stance in order to secure her position in the Republican primary.
