Sen. Ted Cruz cashes in after shutdown

President Barack Obama said today that there were “no winners” in the government shutdown, but Sen. Ted Cruz may beg to differ. His spokesperson John Drogin tweeted that Cruz raised $1.19 million across his political action committees – about 20 percent more than he raised last quarter.

But how much did the economy lose? $24 billion, according to Standard & Poor’s. The two weeks of no pay for furloughed employees left some people down to the bare essentials and filing for unemployment, though they will receive back pay for the time they were out of work. The furloughs have also affected some workers’ sick and vacation days, reports the Washington Post, and many contractors who were affected by the furloughs will not receive any back pay, reports Bloomberg.

Though Ted Cruz is widely reviled by Democrats and even members of his own party for instigating and prolonging the government shutdown, the move made him more popular with members of the Tea Party, according to polls conducted by the Pew Research Center.

In July, just 47 percent of Tea Party members had favorable opinions of him; in October, that number soared to 74 percent. His popularity among non-Tea Party conservatives dropped slightly from 26 percent favorable to 25. Cruz won the Values Voter Summit straw poll with 42 percent of the vote; runners-up Ben Carson and Rick Santorum received 13 percent each, reports the Washington Post.
