VIDEO: Mother’s dying Christmas wish is fulfilled two years after her death

David Schmitz and his family received a very special gift this Christmas from his late wife. Brenda Schmitz died in 2011 after a battle with Stage IV ovarian cancer and left a letter with her friend before she died.

Her local radio station in Iowa, Star 102.5, has a “Christmas wish” special every year in which the station grants a few Christmas wishes to people in the community. Brenda asked her friend until the time was right to send in her Christmas letter – she wanted to wait until her husband found a new partner.

Radio hosts at Star 102.5 asked David to come into the station, where he told his story. “She was very down to earth,” he said of Brenda. “A loving mother, terrific wife.” He paused to regain his composure several times as he spoke. “Since she’s been gone, she’s shown a lot of signs that she’s still here,” he added.

David also talked about his new fiancee, Jane, who has taken in his children and step children. “She has stepped in admirably to act as a mother,” he said.

The hosts then explained why they had invited him to come speak about his wife. They began to read Brenda’s letter to the station. had a Christmas wish to fulfill for David and his family. The letter was dated Aug. 3, 2011. “When you are in receipt of this letter, I will have already lost my battle to ovarian cancer,” wrote Brenda. “I told [my friend] once my loving husband David had moved on in his life and had met someone to share his life with again, to mail this letter to all of you at the station.” Brenda explained that she loved the station’s Christmas wish special and had a few of her own.

“I have a wish for David, the boys, the woman and her family, if she has kids also, – I want them to know I love them very much,” wrote Brenda. Her first wish was for Jane to have a “weekend of pampering in all aspects of her life” as a token of appreciation for taking care of the boys. David’s family, including Brenda’s son from a previous marriage and Jane’s two sons from a previous marriage, numbers eight. Brenda also requested that the entire family take a trip to Disney World. Brenda didn’t forget her caretakers from the hospital, either – she asked that the cancer doctors at Mercy Medical Hospital get a night out.

David, overwhelmed by Brenda’s wish, broke down into tears as he soaked in his wife’s generosity. All three wishes were granted by the station.
