Science teacher loses 37 pounds from eating McDonald’s for three months

Take that, Morgan Spurlock. Science teacher John Cisna of Ankeny, Iowa, lost 37 pounds after eating just McDonald’s for three months. But he didn’t follow Spurlock’s diet of Super Sizing his meals and eating 5,000 calories a day. Instead, Cisna limited himself to 2,000 calories and loosely followed recommended dietary guidelines for carbohydrates, proteins, fat calories and cholesterol, reports KCCI.

The teacher asked his students to help him come up with a balanced plan for his three meals at the fast food chain. He wanted to prove to his students that if he was careful about balancing his meals, he could still lose weight even by eating McDonald’s. Cisna told KCCI, “I can eat any food at McDonald’s (that) I want as long as I’m smart for the rest of the day with what I balance it out with.” He chose menu items like egg white delights, oatmeal and salads, though he also had burgers and fries in addition to the healthier menu options. He also started walking 45 minutes a day during his experiment.

After three months, not only did Cisna lose 37 pounds, but his cholesterol also dropped from 249 to 170 and his LDL cholesterol, also known as bad cholesterol, went from 173 to 113. He said he’s not surprised by the weight loss because he did not keep track of his calories before, and he did not exercise. He said, “The point behind this documentary is, ‘Hey, it’s a choice.’ We all have choices. It’s our choices that make us fat, not McDonald’s.”
