Who is Slender Man? That’s the question on everyone’s mind after two Wisconsin girls viciously stabbed a friend during a game of hide-and-seek to appease the mythological character.

Internet meme:

- He is sometimes referred to as Slender Man.

- According to Knowyourmeme.com, he is often depicted as a tall, thin figure wearing a black suit and a blank face.

- The Slender Man myth was born on June 8th, 2009 during a “paranormal pictures” Photoshop contest launched on the Something Awful forums.

- SA user Eric Knudsen (a.k.a “Victor Surge”) is thought to be the creator.

- Slender Man is known to stalk, kidnap, traumatize and kill people – specifically, children.

- The internet meme took off after two black and white photographs of Slender Man showed him stalking groups of children.

- The creature spawned numerous works of fan art, cosplay and online fan fiction, which has been popularized on the horror website Creepypasta.com

- Slender Man is often depicted as having unnaturally long, tentacle-like arms that he extends to intimidate or capture prey. Some say his victims are helpless against the urge to hug him.

- He is said to have the ability to teleport.

- The goal may trigger a “Slender sickness,” which is a rapid onset of paranoia, nightmares and delusions accompanied by nosebleeds.

Savage Stabbings

Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser, both 12, have been charged as adults for allegedly stabbing their friend, also 12, in an effort to prove their loyalty to Slender Man. The obsessed pair insisted Slender Man was real and lived in a mansion in a Waukesha forest.

Weier told a detective she thought she would impress the bogeyman and be able to go to live with him if they killed, so they singled out a classmate in February and began making a detailed plan.

The pair carried out their attack on May 31. The victim survived after being stabbed 19 times. Both suspects were arrested shortly after.

Creepypasta’s moderator has defended the website after it came under fire for influencing the girls.
