Lowe’s employees came to the rescue when disabled Vietnam vet Michael Sulsona’s wheelchair broke down in the store earlier last week. Sulsona, of Graniteville, Staten Island, was shopping in the Mariners Harbor store when his wheelchair fell apart; three employees quickly came to the amputee’s aid.

Sulsona wrote in a letter to the Staten Island Advance that after the employees placed him in another chair, “they took the wheelchair apart and replaced the broken parts and told me, ‘We’re going to make this chair like new.’” The employees made good on their promise and in about an hour, Sulsona left the store 45 minutes after it closed.

“I kept thanking them and all they could say was, ‘It was our honor.’ The actions of these three employees at Lowe’s showed me there are some who still believe in stepping to the plate,” wrote Sulsona. He confirmed that the wheelchair is indeed in ship shape now.

Sulsona said that he lost both legs above the knee after he stepped on a land mine in Vietnam in 1971. He also said that he has been waiting to get a new wheelchair from the Veterans Affairs for two years and was denied a spare wheelchair.

“I’ve been waiting over two years for a new wheelchair and this is the third time the bolt has snapped,” he told the Advance. Sulsona added that he’s one of many veterans struggling with long wait times at the VA; he also pointed out that he was lucky to have his wheelchair break down inside Lowe’s instead of on the street.
