Letters: This is not your father’s GOP
Re: ‘Parties don’t disagree on civil rights’ (Metro, Nov. 27)
Democrats were the conservative party a long time before and during the early 1960s. Reagan was originally a Democrat. To believe the Republicans of today have anything to do with the Republicans of Lincoln’s era is disingenuous and laughable.
Also, the conservatives of Eisenhower’s era were no way near as paranoid and as seemly insane as the current crop.

Letter writer Darrell Hartwick’s nostalgia for the Republican party of old is sweet, but that’s all it is. The Republican Party of 2013 is committed to just three things: the destruction of President Obama (as Sen. Mitch McConnell himself made clear in 2009), the elevation of the private sector at the expense of the public (the recent shutdown and ongoing budgetary drama being their primary result) and reversing the last 50 years’ worth of progress on social equality (the voting restriction passed in 33 Republican-controlled states being the latest version of this).
No amount of waxing nostalgic for Eisenhower or even Reagan will change this reality.
