Letter: A friend in need … needs friends

In the ’80s movie “Mass Appeal,” the priest (Jack Lemmon) declared “I’ve baptized you, married you, but never cared enough about you to risk losing you.” I thought of that as I watched the “friends;” celebs, agents and those on the “in” attending Philip Seymour Hoffman’s funeral. Where were they?

Where were they when he was beyond the usual disheveled, when he was at an airport intoxicated, when he was seen at an Atlanta bar, given his history of addictive behavior?
Never upset the Big Guy, fearing you might lose his favor. Mr. Hoffman, in the throes of addiction, needed to count on good friends. Sadly the adage, “show me who your friends are, I will show you who you are,” or at least where you will end up, came into play.

There was an episode of “M.A.S.H.” where Hawkeye turned in 16-year-old Ron Howard, who was trying to pass for 18. Hawkeye was destined to save this young man’s life. Howard responded “I will hate you forever” to which Hawkeye replied, “Let it be a long and happy hate.”

It’s a shame Mr. Hoffman’s “friends” didn’t feel the same way.
