Letter: Don’t assume things about addicts

Re: ‘A friend in need might need friends’ (Feb. 12)

Anyone who places blame on the friends of an addict for not trying harder to save the addict’s life and then compares the friends’ alleged lack of concern to an ’80s movie and a “M*A*S*H” episode should study up on addiction and volunteer at a recovery program to gain a better understanding of addictive personalities.

  1. Curious to know where David DiBello (A friend in need…needs friends) received his information when he said “he watched friends, celebs, agents and those on the ‘in’ attending Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s funeral” and went on to imply they were not there for him during his throes of addiction. How does Mr. DiBello know that? Does he know any of Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s friends or agents? Speaking from personal experience, when an addict wants to stick a needle in his arm nothing can stop him. A friend or loved one cannot be with the addict 24/7, unless you lock them up and that’s another column altogether. Addicts are cunning and manipulative. But lovely people when sober, I should know. Do not fault Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s friends and agents, fault the demon of addiction.
