Letters: Reagan did help the world redecorate without the Iron Curtain

Re: ‘The people, not Reagan, broke up USSR’ (Metro, March 17)

Letter writer Timothy Laren is mistaken in his assertion that Reagan had nothing to do with the breakup of the USSR.

As examples, I give you Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1969. The people revolted but were crushed. With Reagan as president of the United States, he increased our military budget and the oppressed people felt they had a friend in Reagan, and as such were more willing to speak truth to power.

This is why people under communist domination were more willing to speak out for freedom — unlike under the Obama administration, which is harassing patriotic Americans who sought to create 501 (C) 3 organizations.

The comparison with the kings of Spain and France is erroneous and not applicable to what Reagan did.

To answer Timothy Laren’s letter to the editor, Ukraine never used WMDs against its own people. Further, it got rid of its WMDs in exchange for a now-broken promise from Russia never to invade.
As to his other comments, Reagan ended the policy of appeasing the Soviets and his policies led to their economic weakness. He fully supported the oppressed (“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”) — unlike Obama, who did nothing during the attempted Green Revolution uprisings in Tehran.

Finally, Laren is also wrong about King Louis XVI, who was our ally in the American Revolution, as he sent troops and great financial support.
