Letter: Lily Cole site snarled in controversy
Re: ‘Lily Cole: Making all your wishes come true’ (Metro, March 27)
While the intention of Lily Cole’s Impossible.com is probably sweet and lovely enough, there’s something missing from Metro’s story about this impractical project. Cole is reported to have a net worth of £8 million, yet she applied for and received a U.K. government-mandated grant for £200,000, from the Innovation in Giving fund set up by the Cabinet office’s Minister for Civil Society.
Frankly, her website is not working. The money could have been better spent on real programs devoted to education, nutrition or mental health. Cole’s backer Jimmy Wales refuses to share the grant application with the public. Given Wales’ close ties to the U.K. government, it sounds fishy.
