Letters: No holds barred when it comes to citizenship
Re: ‘Could this be the end of ICE holds in Philadelphia?’
Being a lifelong U.S. citizen, I know full well that America is a country based on “rule of law” and political checks and balances. Reading your article causes me to ponder a trait President Obama and Mayor Nutter have in common: When faced with a law they apparently don’t like, they’ve been known to sign an “executive order” that shapes the law to their liking! Yet while in public, both men spew rhetoric lamenting lawlessness. What would living in the U.S. be like if the citizens circumvented the laws they don’t like? Isn’t there enough criminal non-compliance already? Politicians governing via fiat upset the political checks and balances inherent in our political system.

Mayor Nutter has signed an executive order against Immigrations and Customs Enforcement detainer holds. Now comes the next step: BRING THE DEPORTEES HOME! This is their victory, too. They deserve to share that victory with their loved ones here in Philadelphia. This executive order would be a shallow victory if Mayor Nutter does not bring them home.
