Letter: IRS following the law
Re: ‘Would Dems be OK with the IRS on their backs?’ (Metro, May 16-18)
Why do you keep publishing letters that have clear misstatements of fact? Letter writer Ron Shelton seems to think that the IRS only reviewed right-wing applications. Not true at all. Many progressives were also reviewed, but Rep. Issa ONLY complained about the Tea Party ones. Also, the progressives want clear and open rules, while the Republicans want special deals.

In Friday’s Metro, a letter to the editor says that the IRS targeted conservatives and wonders if Democrats would mind being targeted the next time a Republican is elected president. In fact, the IRS investigated more progressive groups than conservative groups! More to the point, the IRS investigated political groups of all stripes because THE LAW REQUIRES IT TO. I do not believe political groups should get to be nonprofits, but if you do, don’t attack the IRS, change the law.
