Letter: Understand what you’re trying to ban
Re: ‘Change the way we confront violent people’ (Metro, June 2)
Letter writer Murray Calhoun seems really concerned about guns. He thinks weapons capable of shooting hundreds of rounds per minute should be kept out of the hands of citizens. He’s not alone. That’s why the federal government banned them in 1934. The perpetrators of all of the mass shootings that have occurred in the last few years all utilized semi-automatic weapons. Semi-automatic weapons fire a single shot per trigger pull. If Calhoun is in favor of a complete gun ban, he should say so. Banning guns might be easier than dealing with the failures of our mental health system, but it won’t solve the problem.
