Point-Counterpoint: Kemba vs. Jimmer

Jimmer Fredette led the country in scoring, but Kemba Walker was a one-man wrecking crew in the Big East tournament. So who you got?

Which player would you rather have — UConn’s Kemba Walker or BYU’s Jimmer Fredette?

Shouldn’t the matchup be Kemba Walker vs. Jared Sullinger? After all, no guard in the country can hang with the Energizer Bunny, not even the almighty Jimmer.

Congrats on winning the scoring title in the Mountain West, Jimmer. That conference is to college basketball what truTV is to a cable lineup. You can take the game’s best shooter, we’ll take the game’s best pure scorer.

Walker scores in bunches, but more importantly scores when it matters. No one has a faster first step off the dribble nor a more lethal shot in the clutch. Kemba has six game-winners and just put up 33 and sank all 14 free throws in a second-round win against the Big East’s best defense.

He’s the ultimate teammate, too, spreading the ball (17 assists) and his moxie to freshmen teammates.

Until the phrase, “You’ve been Kemba’d” gets trademarked, then there is no debate. Jimmer Fredette is the best player in this tourney.

Jimmer led the nation in scoring, at 28.8 points — a full five points ahead of Kemba — and has already upped that average (33.0) in the Dance. Fredette can drain it from anywhere. He can split screens. He can create his own shot off the dribble. And he can set up others, as evidenced by 13 assists in the first two games.

Bottom line, Fredette is a one-man wrecking crew, who could easily be confused for the bizarre love child of Larry Bird and Diana Taurasi (yes, that’s a compliment). But don’t take my word for it, listen to Bird himself: “The best player in college basketball. He can get the ball in the hole from anywhere.”

Plus, he’s Mormon, so he’s got God on his side.
