Lochte beats Phelps in 400 IM, claims first gold medal for U.S.

Lochte also beat Phelps in the 400 IM during the Olympic trials.

So the rumors are true. Ryan Lochte is faster than Michael Phelps — at least in the 400 IM.

For months, the speculation has been swirling over whether or not Lochte could really give Phelps, the holder of 14 gold medals, a run for his money. The score was settled today as Lochte didn’t just win the event — he dominated it, finishing first with almost a 3-second lead.

It wasn’t a neck and neck race between Lochte and Phelps, as many had predicted. Lochte claimed the first U.S. gold medal, but Phelps didn’t win any medals in this race, finishing fourth. Phelps was hoping to reclaim the gold medal he won in this event at the Beijing games. Apparently, though, things have changed since 2008.

Here’s how it broke down:

1. Ryan Lochte (United States) 4:05.18
2. Thiago Pereira (Brazil) 4:08.86
3. Kosuke Hagino (Japan) 4:08.94
4. Michael Phelps (United States) 4:09.28

The rivals will face each other one more time in the 200 IM on August 2.
