Patriots’ Dennard found guilty for assaulting an officer

Dennard

Much of the reason that talented cornerback Alfonzo Dennard fell to the Patriots in last April’s NFL Draft was due to the fact that he was arrested just five days before the annual event.

It wasn’t until Wednesday that Dennard and the Patriots learned his fate from the incident. The former Nebraska star was found guilty on charges of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest near a Lincoln, Neb. bar.

Dennard reportedly punched the police officer in the face during the fight. His felony conviction carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine, according to the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald, though it is expected that Dennard will serve just 180 days in jail.

The fight reportedly started when Dennard “shouldered” a 22-year-old University of Nebraska student as the area’s bars closed for the night. According to the the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star, it led to a fight between several civilians and when police officers arrived, Dennard went “toe-to-toe” with an officer.

The 23-year-old Dennard became a starter in the Pats’ defensive backfield toward the end of the 2012 season and recorded three interceptions and had 35 tackles on the year.
