The Red Sox are going on the premise that you can never be too deep.

Boston traded for Seattle first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp on Wednesday and gave up relatively little – a player to be named later and/or cash.

Carp hasn’t wowed anyone with his major league numbers at the plate as he is a career .255 hitter and has just 18 homers and 71 RBIs in 173 MLB games. The Mariners designated him for assignment last week.

Carp is considered a strong defensive player at both first base and in the outfield.
