Jeter likely to start season on disabled list

The news the Yankees seemed to be hinting at for the better part of a week appears to finally be ready to come true.

General manager Brian Cashman told reporters in camp on Sunday that shortstop Derek Jeter would likely start the season on the disabled list.

“I don’t anticipate him starting the season,” Cashman told reporters. “I can read his face, and his face today tells me the reality is starting to sink in that this disabled list situation might be necessary.”

Jeter, 38, was scratched from Sunday’s game after feeling more soreness in his surgically repaired left ankle. He broke the ankle last October in the ALCS against the Tigers.

Jeter had told reporters all along he planned to target Opening Day for his return, even after soreness cropped up last week. At the time, Jeter said the pain was normal, according to his doctors, and he wasn’t concerned. But then last Thursday Cashman said Jeter would not play in any major league spring training games in order to back date his injury should he need to begin the season on the DL.

The last time a player other than Jeter started at shortstop for the Yankees was Luis Sojo in 2001. Jeter dealt with a similar situation that year, as he was injured in spring training, back dated and began the season on the 15-day DL.

The Jeter injury is just one in a long list of maladies the team has suffered during the spring. First baseman Mark Teixeira is out until at least June with a wrist injury. Outfielder Curtis Granderson fractured his forearm in his first fame of spring training and is out until mid-May. And third baseman Alex Rodriguez underwent hip surgery in January and will miss at least the first half of the 2013 season.

News also broke on Sunday that closer Mariano Rivera is dealing with severe migraines. The New York Post reported Rivera underwent a CAT scan and blood tests after experiencing the headaches for two weeks. Doctors diagnosed him with migraines. Cashman said the team was not worried and Rivera was scheduled to make a relief appearance on Sunday.
