Bruins extremely sloppy in loss to Flyers

The Bruins continue to play terrible down the stretch and heading into the postseason. Tuesday at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, the B’s fell, 5-2, to the Flyers – a team that’s been eliminated from the playoffs for a while now.

The only solace for Boston (27-13-5) is that Montreal lost 3-2 at New Jersey, meaning that the B’s somehow remain in control of the Northeast Division with three games left (Canadiens only have two).

Philadelphia (21-22-3) never trailed and it used a pair of goals seven seconds apart in the second period to take control for good. This might have been Boston’s sloppiest game of the season since every goal for the Flyers came directly off a Bruins giveaway. Scott Hartnell scored 1:40 into the game after a couple turnovers by Boston right in front of their own goal. One of the few highlights for the B’s was the first goal in a Bruins uniform by Wade Redden. He followed up Jaromir Jagr’s rebound and Carl Soderberg had the second assist at 4:54.

Matt Read had incredible hand-eye coordination to knock a rebound out of mid-air in the second period then Zdeno Chara basically scored on his own goal as he inadvertently bounced it off Anton Khudobin’s skate and into the net seven seconds later. Tuukka Rask was summoned but that didn’t make much of a difference. Flyers goaltender Steve Mason had 39 saves and was named the game’s first star. Jakub Voracek ended it with a 2-on-1 early in the third period. David Krejci had a great individual move that cut it to 4-2 but 13 seconds later, another turnover handed a goal to Simon Gagne.

Thursday night’s game (7:30 p.m., NESN) vs. Tampa Bay (17-24-4) at TD Garden is a makeup date from the blizzard on Feb. 9. It’ll be the second night of a back-to-back for the Lightning, whose season ends on Saturday. The Bruins are running out of time to start playing like themselves again before the playoffs begin next Wednesday.
