Red Sox fall to Blue Jays in back-and-forth slugfest

boston-redsox-logo1

In what was one of the best Aprils on record for the Red Sox, it ended with one of the most entertaining games, a back-and-forth slugfest with the Blue Jays. In the end the Blue Jays came out on top 9-7, spoiling the Red Sox chances at breaking their previous club record for wins in the month of April. The Sox finished the month with an 18-8 record, tying a franchise mark for wins in the first month.

David Ortiz continued his hot streak since his return with a bases clearing, three-run double in the seventh inning putting the Red Sox ahead 7-6 at the time. The lead was short-lived as Edwin Encarnarcion (4 RBIs) responded with a two-run homer off reliever Junichi Tazawa in the bottom half of the inning, his second of the game, putting the Blue Jays back on top 8-7, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Ortiz led the Red Sox’ offensive attack going 2-for-4 with a home run, double and four RBIs. He now has a 21-game hit streak dating back to last July. Mike Carp hit his first home run in a Red Sox uniform, a solo shot in the fourth, and then Jonny Gomes, while pinch-hitting for Carp in the sixth, also went yard for his first homer as a Red Sox. Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia added two hits in the loss.

Starter Jon Lester took a no-decision in arguably his worst outing of the season. He allowed six runs on six hits in six innings of work while striking out five. Tazawa took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh. Joel Hanrahan, making his first appearance since coming off the disabled list, allowed a run in the eighth.

The teams will meet again tomorrow night (7:07, NESN) as Clay Buchholz will look to continue his dominant start and be opposed by Mark Buehrle.

What they’ll be saying: Everyone knew Lester’s unbeaten streak would come to an end at some point, and tonight was that night. He didn’t look particularly sharp, including allowing a mammoth home run to Encarnarcion in the fifth. His ERA rose to 3.35 … The offense, especially the power and the ability to fight back from behind was a positive sign for the Red Sox, but turned into a negative with Tazawa giving up the lead. Also, Hanrahan struggled in his first outing back, but before the game manager John Farrell said he would not be the closer as the job is still Andrew Bailey’s … All things considered the loss should not put a damper on what was a very good opening month for the Red Sox.
