An ugly loss for the Red Sox in Texas

The Red Sox fell to the Rangers 7-0 in the first game of a three-game series this weekend in Texas. It was just the second time all season the Red Sox dropped the first game of a series.

Felix Doubront struggled on the mound for the Sox allowing six runs on 12 hits in just 3 2/3 innings of work. He also walked one and struck out two. The fourth inning was the big inning, which saw the Rangers score five times and take control of the game.

Reliever Alex Wilson allowed a run in 2 2/3 innings of work and then Clayton Mortensen pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to close out the game. The Rangers finished with 18 hits in the win.

David Ortiz did extend his hitting streak to 23 games with an infield single. As a team the Red Sox finished with six hits, as they were held in check by Rangers starter Derek Holland. Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits in the loss.

The teams will be back in action tomorrow night (8:05, NESN) where John Lackey will take to the mound for the Sox, while the Rangers will counter with Alexi Ogando.

What they’ll be saying: It clearly wasn’t Doubront’s night as he allowed a season-high 12 hits in just 3 2/3 innings. He threw 96 pitches, just 58 for strikes and hiss ERA rose to 5.67 on the year … The rest of the series will be a big test for the Sox as the Rangers are the best opponent they have faced to this point in the season and gives them a chance to validate their strong start to the season.
