Twins take three-of-four from Red Sox

This wasn’t the best trip through the rotation for the Red Sox as they went 1-4, most recently falling to the Twins 5-3 Thursday night at Fenway Park. Overall, the team has lost six of their last seven.

Starter John Lackey had arguably his best stuff of any start this season, but it wasn’t enough to get the win. With the Sox leading 2-1 going into the sixth, the wheels began to fall off. The Twins scored four runs, including a two-run home run from Oswaldo Arcia to put the Twins ahead for good at 5-2. The Red Sox responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning and threatened in each of remaining innings, but couldn’t get the timely hit they needed.

Lackey went seven innings, allowing five runs (just one earned), on six hits while striking out eight. Koji Uehara and Craig Breslow threw two scoreless innings to close out the game.

The Red Sox had a trio of players finishing with two hits in Shane Victorino, Dustin Pedroia and Daniel Nava. Stephen Drew and Mike Napoli also hit safely, but the Red Sox lacked the timely hit as they left 10 runners on base.

The Blue Jays now come to town for a weekend series, in which now becomes very important for the Sox as they look to get back on the winning track. Jon Lester will take to the mound tomorrow night (7:10, NESN) and be opposed by Ramon Ortiz.

What they’ll be saying: It was a bit of a tough luck loss for the Sox as they hit a lot of balls hard, ending up being hit right at fielders. They also fell victim to some questionable third strike calls in the ninth inning as Victorino and Dustin Pedroia both struck out looking … Lackey pitched very well and may have been his own worst enemy, committing a throwing error in the sixth trying to turn a double play, which led to three unearned runs. He’s now 1-3 on the year, but has allowed fewer than three runs in three of his four starts.
