Red Sox score four runs in ninth inning to stun Indians

Trailing 5-2 going into the ninth inning, the Red Sox scored four runs for a dramatic, come-from-behind, 6-5 win over the Indians Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park. It was the second come-from-behind win in as many days for Boston.

Indians closer Chris Perez entered the ninth with a three-run lead. The comeback began with a Dustin Pedroia walk, and then David Ortiz crushed a double to dead center field setting up 2nd and 3rd with no outs and Mike Napoli then drove in Pedroia with an RBI ground out. After Ortiz stole third base, Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove him home with another RBI ground out, cutting the deficit to 5-4 with two outs. A Jonny Gomes walk and a Stephen Drew single plus a stolen base, set up Jose Iglesias, who worked a two out walk loading the bases.

Perez was then pulled from the game with an apparent shoulder injury in the middle of Jacoby Ellsbury’s at-bat. Joe Smith came in, and on the first pitch Ellsbury’s gap shot scored Gomes and Drew to allow the Red Sox to walk-off with their most dramatic win of the season.

Drew paced the offense with three hits on the afternoon, while Ellsbury added two.

Felix Doubront started for the Sox and went six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out eight. He did allow two home runs. Alex Wilson pitched a scoreless seventh, before Craig Breslow allowed a run in the eighth, but despite allowing the run Breslow did pick up the win.

The Red Sox will now take on the Phillies in their first interleague series of the season. The teams will play two games at Fenway Monday and Tuesday before two more in Philedelphia Wednesday and Thursday. Tomorrow night (7:10, NESN) Alfredo Aceves will make a spot start for the Sox after Clay Buchholz was scratched with irritation in his right AC joint, and the Phillies will counter with Tyler Cloyd.

What they’ll be saying: By far this was the best win of the season for the Sox with everyone contributing, as even the outs in the ninth inning drove in runs. It was the fourth walk-off win of the year for the team, pretty impressive for it being May 26. The Red Sox took three-of-four from the Indians, which was a good sign for the team after dropping two-of-three against the White Sox in their previous series … Doubront seems to have turned a corner, after struggling initially out of the gate this season. Although his velocity is still down, he’s learned how to pitch better to location and thus is seeing better results.
