Red Sox win home-and-home series finale over Phillies

The Phillies had to settle for a series split with the Red Sox after the Boston offense lit up starter Jonathan Pettibone and the bullpen in the home-and-home series finale at Citizens Bank Park Thursday night.

Pettibone surrendered four runs in the first inning. The Phillies managed to get back two of those runs on Delmon Young’s two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame, but that was as interesting as the Fightins made things for the home fans.

Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury had five stolen bases in the game and beloved Beantown slugger David Ortiz hit a home run to pace the Boston offense.

After holding its 4-2 advantage through five innings, Boston (33-22) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh inning, then tacked on three more off struggling Phillies reliever Chad Durbin in the top of the ninth to blow the game wide open.

The two teams split games in both two-game sets played in Boston and Philadelphia this week.

For the third time in a week, the Phillies (26-28) failed when in position to climb back to the .500 mark for the first time since mid-April.

Durbin saw his ERA balloon to 9.00 with his lackluster effort Thursday night, and could very well be on his way off the Phillies’ roster.

Pettibone suffered his first big-league loss. He is now 3-1.
