Red Sox defeat Rays 10-8 in wild 14-inning game

Despite blowing a 6-0 lead the Red Sox were able to eventually come away with a 10-8 win in 14 innings over the Rays at Tropicana Field Monday night in a game which featured pretty much everything.

The Red Sox jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning off of Rays starter Alex Cobb, but the Rays battled back all game long off of Sox starter John Lackey. Lackey went 5 2/3 innings allowing four runs on ten hits while striking out two. Things got a bit heated in the sixth, Lackey’s last inning, when he drilled Rays outfielder Matt Joyce in the back, this after Joyce homered off him to lead off the game. Both benches cleared, but nothing more came of the incident.

After Lackey departed Andrew Miller (seventh) and Junichi Tazawa (eighth) each allowed a run and the Rays tied the game at six sending the game to extra innings. The Sox appeared to win the game in the tenth when Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run single, but Andrew Bailey blew the save in the bottom half of the inning with the Rays scoring two runs tying the game at eight. It could have been worse for Bailey but he got out of a bases loaded, no out jam to extend the game.

The game was eventually won in the 14th on a Daniel Nava RBI single scoring Shane Victorino. Saltalamachhia added another RBI single for an insurance run. Franklin Morales pitched the 13th and the 14th to earn the win.

Offensively the Sox were led by Saltalamachhia who went 4-for-7 with 3 RBIs. Jacoby Ellsbury, Victorino, Nava and Mike Carp all had two hits apiece in the win as well.

The two teams will be back at it tonight (7:10, NESN) where Jon Lester will take to the mound for the Sox and be opposed by Roberto Hernandez.

What they’ll be saying: This could have been the Red Sox’ worst loss of the season, blowing a 6-0 lead and then a two run lead in the tenth, but they didn’t let that happen and came away with the win. Their bullpen is now completely shot and now need to find a starter for Wednesday as Morales was due to make a spot start. This due to the Sox’ doubleheader with the Angels last Saturday … It will be interesting to see if anything carries over to Tuesday with Joyce as he was still pretty upset about it after the game. It wouldn’t make much sense for Lackey to do it intentionally as he had retired seven straight and it was a two-run game. He and Rays manager Joe Maddon will still upset over it after the game.
