Tim Tebow, Bill Belichick speak on first day of minicamp

Just an ordinary day of mid-June minicamp for the New England Patriots, right?

Not exactly.

The rain halted, the sun came out, and newly signed Tim Tebow emerged from the Gillette Stadium facilities for his first day as a member of the Pats. How else did you expect it to happen?

The Patriots shocked the NFL world on Monday when word surfaced that they had signed Tebow.

But what about his terrible mechanics?! Or the circus he brings with him everywhere he goes?! What does this mean for Tom Brady?!

Those were all questions that many Pats fans asked – or yelled – at the nearest person, upon hearing the news. Unfortunately for them, those answers won’t be coming anytime soon – especially not from Bill Belichick.

Belichick was swarmed by media on Tuesday, and they all had one QB on their mind. But Belichick wouldn’t give anybody the quote they were hoping to get. Yup, classic Belichick.

“Anything we do is what we feel is in the best interests of the team,” Belichick said about the decision to sign Tebow. “Tim is a talented player that is smart and works hard. We’ll see how it goes.”

Tebow was quite a distraction in his one season with the Jets, whether it was due to media scrutiny or fanfare. But Belichick doesn’t see that as being an issue.

“In all honesty, we’ve been in front of bigger crowds than this before,” Belichick said. “We’ll just keep doing what our job is. We’re going to try to get better as a football team, individually and collectively, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

While it doesn’t make for great TV, radio, or print, that approach to Tebow’s arrival and team-first talk is probably the only way the he’ll find any success in the league. When he arrived in New York City, the Jets held an introductory press conference for him.

In New England? Tebow didn’t field a single question. Instead, he made a statement to the media hoard that surrounded him as he came off the field.

“First and foremost I just want to thank the Patriots for giving me an opportunity,” Tebow said. “I’m very thankful. It’s such an honor to be a Patriot and play for coach Belichick and for coach [Josh] McDaniels, and learn under Tom [Brady] and be a part of this franchise — part of a very successful franchise. I found that out first hand; I lost to them several times. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to working hard every single day and getting better and learning under some great people.

“That’s all I’ve got, but thank y’all so much. And God bless.”
