Gomes’ walk-off gives Red Sox 3-1 win over Rays

BOSTON — After the Red Sox blew a 1-0 lead in the top of the ninth, the Red Sox quickly responded as Jonny Gomes belted a walk-off home run into the Monster seats giving the Sox a 3-1 win over the Rays in Game 2 of a day-night doubleheader. It was the sixth walk-off of the season for the Red Sox and are now 9-2 against the Rays this season, including a perfect 5-0 at Fenway.

“Thankfully we got the last emotional swing on our side,” manager John Farrell said. “He bailed us out … In a limited number of at bats against [Joel] Peralta it’s the [third]time he’s taken him deep and very timely obviously.”

With the Red Sox leading 1-0 going into the ninth inning, closer Andrew Bailey allowed a lead-off home run to Rays No. 9 hitter Kelly Johnson to tie the game at one and spoil a tremendous start from Felix Doubront. It was Bailey’s third blown save of the season.

Doubront was outstanding for the Red Sox, pitching by far his best game of the season. The left-hander threw eight shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out six. He did not walk a batter and needed only 93 pitches. Even more impressive for Doubront was he retired the final 17 hitters he faced.

Daniel Nava hit a solo home run in the second inning to account for the first Red Sox run. Jose Iglesias extended his hitting streak to 18 games, the longest by a rookie this season.

The teams will wrap up their brief three-game series tomorrow night (7:10, NESN) where Ryan Dempster will get the ball for the Sox and be opposed by Jeremy Hellickson.

What they’ll be saying: There were some big emotional swings in the ninth inning, but thankfully the Red Sox got the biggest on Gomes’ walk-off home run. Going into the at-bat Gomes was two for his last 14, but came though in the clutch, something he’s had a knack for this season. Ironically, it was his third-career go-ahead homer off of Peralta … The big story of the game was Doubront who had by far his best outing of season and even the best start of his entire career tossing eight shutout innings. The Sox lefty seems to have found his game as since May 16 he’s allowed three runs or less on all seven starts and has an ERA of 2.81 during that span.
