Red Sox defeat Rays on rain-filled afternoon at Fenway

BOSTON — After waiting through a three-hour rain delay, with another game on tap later in the night, the Red Sox defeated the Rays 5-1 in the first of a day-night doubleheader at Fenway Park Tuesday afternoon.

The Red Sox scored once in the first, twice in the third and again in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead before the rain began to pour down on Fenway in the middle of the fifth inning. The game was delayed for 2:59 before play resumed just before 6:00 with the Red Sox allowing ticket holders for Game 2 to come in and watch the final four innings. Those fans saw back-to-back triples from Jacoby Ellbury and Shane Victorino in the sixth inning to plate the fifth Sox run.

“[David] Ortiz had a big two-run single which kind of worked against their shift and found a way to get the two-out RBI, but it was just a solid performance all the way around by the guys at the plate,” manager John Farrell said.

Ortiz led the offense going 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Ellsbury and Victorino were run-scoring machines at the top of the lineup scoring three times and twice respectively. Ellsbury went 3-for-5, finishing a home run shy of the cycle.

Making a spot start again for the Sox, Alfredo Aceves delivered once again. The right-hander went five innings and allowed just one run on three hits while walking three and striking out two. He only threw 75 pitches, but did not return after the three hour rain delay. The bullpen was impressive, tossing four scoreless innings as Junichi Tazawa, Andrew Miller, Koji Uehara and Craig Breslow all threw one inning each in the win.

Game 2 of the doubleheader will see the Sox send Felix Doubront to the mound and the Rays will counter with Jake Odorizzi.

What they’ll be saying: Aceves picked up his fourth win of the season and his third when making a spot start. He almost didn’t make the start as he was stuck in traffic getting to the ballpark and Franklin Morales was put on watch. Aceves was in constant communication with the team and made it out to the bullpen about 15 minutes before first pitch … The top of the order carried the Sox as the No.’s 5-9 hitters went 1-for-15 with eight strikeouts.
