Draft Notebook: Sixers digging in for big man, not Bynum

Trading for Bynum was just one of a handful of huge mistakes for the Sixers.
Trading for Bynum was just one of a handful of huge mistakes for the Sixers.

The Sixers are rumored to be looking for a big man with the No. 11 pick in Thursday night’s NBA draft. Names being bandied about include Steven Adams, Cody Zeller and Mason Plumlee.

While front-office members remain holed up in a secret location planning for the pick, there was some news regarding the man that was supposed to be the answer in the middle. Andrew Bynum’s agent told The Associated Press that the center is done with his rehab and will be ready for training camp. The Sixers have yet to contact the big man.

“Philly will do what Philly does. I can’t control it,” he told The Associated Press. “Next week, I have a feeling I’ll be meeting with a couple of teams.”

Bynum is set to become an unrestricted free agent and can meet with any NBA team he chooses. He earned $16.5 million from the Sixers without playing a single minute.

While the Sixers have never flat-out denied bringing Bynum back, new GM Sam Hinkie did say this at his introductory press conference.

“I think of Andrew like the thousands of other young men that are walking around the world that are unrestricted free agents, that have potential to play NBA basketball, and he is one of those,” Hinkie said.
