Errors help Phillies beat Padres in 13

The Phillies used an eighth-inning rally and the help of two errors by the home team in the 13th inning to defeat the Padres in San Diego Wednesday night, 7-5.

It was well into Thursday morning in Philadelphia before the extra-innings contest was decided.

Delmon Young, who went 2 for 4 on the night, tied the game at 5-5 with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

After 4 1/2 scoreless innings, the Phillies took the lead in the 13th inning. Chase Utley, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame , and Domonic Brown, who drew a two-out walk, scored the decisive runs for the Phillies when Ben Revere reached on errors by Padres second baseman Logan Forsythe.

Forsythe bobbled Revere’s grounder in the hole, then bounced his throw in an attempt to gun down Brown at the plate.

The Padres (39-40) committed three errors on the night.

Five Phillies relief pitchers combined to toss seven scoreless innings. Closer Jonathan Papelbon, who had blown four straight save opportunities, picked up his 15th save of the season.

Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels allowed all five runs. He pitched just six innings, allowing seven hits, including a home run by center fielder Chris Denorfia, and two walks.

Hamels’ ERA now stands at 4.58.

The Phillies (38-41) continue their West Coast swing tonight against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The game is scheduled to begin at 10:10 p.m., with rookie hurler Jonathan Pettibone set to start against the Dodgers’ Zack Greinke.
