Greg Oden, not Josh Smith, on Celtics free agent wish list

The likelihood of the Celtics making a big splash via free agency this offseason is extremely slim given that they just traded away franchise cornerstones Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

Free agent Josh Smith, long thought to be on Danny Ainge’s wish list, seems headed to some place like Detroit, where he can land a max contract. It’s quite doubtful that the Celtics would give up that kind of loot for Smith at this point in their “rebuilding process.” One player that was at or near the top of Ainge’s wish list seven years ago, Greg Oden, will likely be more in Boston’s price range during this free agent period. Oden, who hasn’t played in an NBA game since Dec. 5, 2009, is coming off his third microfracture knee surgery and it’s believed that this will likely be his last shot at ever finding NBA work again.

The big man, who was the first overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, averaged 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in just 82 games played with the Trail Blazers.
